In the last issue of The Leader, an opinion column written by Multimedia Editor Roxanne Timan titled “Greek life is getting lazy” was met with controversy. Several EC students expressed their frustration with Timan’s criticisms of Greek Life on various social media forums, claiming the column was not factual or professional and reflected poorly on The Leader.

It is important to understand that the column was an opinion piece that does not require the same kind of research or interviews as news stories. The purpose of an opinion column is to serve as a writer’s medium to express an opinion.

It is also important to recognize that all columnists for The Leader have the complete freedom to express their opinion, whatever the opinion may be. The opinion stated in the column thus belongs to the columnist and does not reflect the views or opinions of The Leader as a whole.
