The Elmhurst women’s softball team swept a doubleheader against Beloit College at The Dome in Rosemont on Mar. 30. The scores for the games were 6-3 for game one and 8-1 for game two. Elmhurst’s record now stands at 10-6 for the season.
Game One – Elmhurst 6, Beloit 3
Highlights of the opening game saw the lady Bluejays knock out 11 hits and a strong pitching performance by junior Stephanie Sanidas.
The lady Bluejays scored two runs in the first inning. On a triple by senior Brianna Thompson, junior Lauren Rismondo scored the first run. Thompson scored on a RBI by freshman Bekah Ondracek.
In the second inning, freshman Morganne Evans tripled home a run to set up Elmhurst with a three run lead. A ground out for Evans in the fourth scored another run and Ondracek doubled home two runs to give the lady Bluejays a 6-0 lead.
Sanidas held tight for five innings, retiring 13 batters, including eight consecutive strikeouts during the first three innings. During the sixth inning, sophomore Stephanie Sturino was called in to retire the final two outs. Returning in the seventh inning, Sanidas pitched a perfect inning to close out the game.
On the plate, Ondracek had a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI’s. Evans had two hits and drove in two, while Rismondo was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Sanidas now stands at 6-2. For the game, Sanidas pitched 6.1 innings, allowed five hits and three runs while walking one and earning a season high of 12 strikeouts.
Game Two – Elmhurst 8,
The lady Bluejays scored four runs in the second inning and two runs in the fourth inning to take Beloit in an 8-1 victory.
Elmhurst picked up four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Mikayla Melone scored a run-scoring double, while sophomore Stephanie Sturino followed with a RBI double to give Elmhurst a 2-1 lead. Senior Stephanie Hintz singled home a run and junior Bri Getzloff followed with an RBI triple to push the score to 4-1, Elmhurst.
Elmhurst picked up four more runs in the fourth inning. Senior Nicky Giambalvo drove in a run with a bunt single. Rismondo pounded a double to the wall in left field to drive in two more runs. A ground out by Melone scored the final run.
At the plate, Getzloff finished 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Rismondo, Melone, and Giambalvo all finished with two hits in the game. Rismondo scored two runs and drove in two. Melone drove in two and scored a run, while Giambalvo drove in one and scored a run.
Freshman starting pitcher Val Perrelli took a no-decision by allowing four hits and one run in three innings. Sturino took the win in relief with four scoreless innings, surrendering three hits and fanning five batters.
Elmhurst hosted Loras College in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 2 at The Dome in Rosemont.
After a 1:20 minute lightening delay on Mar. 30, the Elmhurst women’s lacrosse team scored a 10-5 win over Loras College. Sophomore Phoebe LeRoy led the team with a seven-goal performance. Elmhurst’s record now stands at 7-2 for the season.
After the delay, Loras took the lead but senior Natalie Tylka for Elmhurst scored a tying goal to take the lead into the half. Elmhurst took a 5-4 lead into halftime. Following the half, one goal from LeRoy and two goals from Tylka gave the lady Blujays a 7-4 lead. LeRoy continued to be a dominating force with her addition of two more goals which resulted in Elmhurst picking up the 10-5 win.
LeRoy and Tylka scored all ten goals for Elmhurst. Sophomore Theresa Breen added an assist and sophomore Grace Knoebel made 11 saves and allowed five goals.
